Important Information
Waterbuck Lodge is situated in the Limpopo province of South Africa. The nearest airport – Hoedspruit Eastgate – is roughly a 45-minute drive from the lodge. From Johannesburg OR Tambo airport, the fastest route by car is approximately 460km or a 6-hour drive.
The weather varies throughout the year. The summer months of October to March are the rainy season. Temperatures are often moderate to very high with high humidity and some rainstorms can be expected. At this time of year, the bush is vibrant and alive offering stunning views, the arrival of migrant birds and plentiful babies for the green season.
In winter, from April to September, the dry season brings little to no rain. Daytime temperatures are often mild to warm, with evenings being noticeably chilly. At this time of year, the bush is dry and less dense which can make viewing animals much easier as they flock to local watering holes.
Malaria
The Thornybush Nature Reserve, like all of the Kruger region, is in a low-risk malaria area. Cases of malaria do exist, but are seldom within the reserve itself. If you are looking to minimise your risk, it is advisable to travel within the dry months of May to September. During the wet season, we recommend using the insect repellent available at the lodge and covering your arms and legs in the evenings. Concerned travellers are also advised to talk to their doctor about the suitability of prophylactic medication.
